Western Transdanubia (Sopron)
Western Transdanubia. Rich wildlife, forests, lakes, winding rivers, still oxbows, abound fens, mysterious swamps, streams, sand islands, and healing waters characterize the region. During our unusual journey we can get to know the age-long culture and traditions of the people of this hilly area and degust the special cuisine.

The unique flora and fauna of the region is protected by the Fertő-Hanság National Park. Wherever we go here, we find a special waterworld. Thousands of birds fly above our heads and millions of small insects do their work under our feet.
In the dense forests of the area rare animals, like beech-martens, ermines, otters, bustards, black-storks, blue-pigeons, elks, herons, but we can see innumerable amount of butterflies and dragonflies live.
The botanical gardens of the region have plant-rarities. The Őrség-Raab-Goricko Nature-Park, the Szeleste arboretum, Pannonhalma arboretum, the Jel arboretum, the ones in Sárvár and Kámon, the Sopron botanical garden or the Brennberg-valley-walk are the representatives of the local flora. Wandering in these beautiful areas we can see plane, pine, oak, rhododendron, hazel-nut and cedar trees. If you are lucky and come in the right season, you can taste the chestnut or the cranberry.
The still or sometimes wild waters of the Danube, the Rába, the Rábca, the Zala, the Marcal, the Répce and the Gyöngyös rivers provid ace recreation opportunities, for those who like swimming, bathing, rowing or fishing.
We can use the healing power of water, in the thermal-baths of the region. Efficacious and nice medicinal-baths wait the visitors in Bükfürdő, Sárvár, Borgáta and Lenti.
The Western Transdanibia landscape shows a unique harmony of nature's and men's work. Picturesque areas are replaced by mysterious ruins, castles, baroque cities, monuments and medieval churches.
During a castle tour we can visit the Hédervári castle, the baroque Esterházy castle in Fertőd and the medieval fortress-castle in Kapuvár. We can experience the feeling of defeat the Turkish army among the walls of the Győr and Kőszeg fortresses. In the World-Heritage Pannonhalma abbacy we can follow our millenary past
In the many big cities of the region we find frienly people, awe-inspiring sights and colourful programmes. The foremer Roman cities: Sopron (Scrabantia), Győr (Arrabona) and Szombathely (Savaria) represent the ancient Roman presence in Hungary.
The region presents centuries-old folk arts and traditions. Csák, Örség, Göcsej and Szalafő, leads us into the mysterious world of the traditional crafts. We can get to know the work of potters, basket-makers, smiths, locksmiths and sheperds.
The Rábaköz embriodery and wood carvings tell us about the traditions of the region. We can take part in the traditional activities, such as log-pulling, or putting up the may-pole.
While wandering in the region take the opportunity to try the dishes of the local cuisine. Western Transdanubia has a wide range of dishes to choose from. Try the Vas-roast or the bean-dumplings, or the "babsterc".
As the region has excellent wines to offer, we recommend the Sopron Kékfrankos, the best-known one as an appetizer. Have a nice meal.

History of Sopron, Renáta
Sopron is situated at the north-west part of Transdanubia, between Fertõ lake and Sopron mountain, at the bank of Ikva brook, the border of Austria and Hungary. Thousands of visitors are attracted by its diversified natural features, pleasant streets, historical and cultural monuments.
