Bükfürdő

Bük is situated in West-Hungary, in the flat area along the river Répce, at the foot of the Alps. The town is nearly 1000 years old and it was already famous in the time between the two world wars for having the first Hungarian sugar beet washing equipment and an underground conveyor belt linking various divisions. The inhabitants of Bük mainly had agricultural jobs but the discovery of the spa water having a unique mineral composition brought a significant change in their lives. This water came to the surface at the end of the 50s during some oil drillings.

 Bükfürdő

The first spa water pool was built at the end of the sixties, until then the valuable water flowed in a ditch leading to the nearby river Répce. So-called 'ditch bathing' became popular among the inhabitants of the area. The thermal bath spectacularly extended during the next decades. Now it is a resort situated in a 13-hectar park fulfilling all needs, having 26 pools, and it became a bathing and wellness complex for those who seek relaxation and cure possibilities. Several places of accommodation, hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, lots of restaurants, pubs and shops were later built and now they provide a wide range of services. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to our village every year, both Hungarians and foreigners.

Bük has a heritage of monuments, e.g. the Szapáry-castle, and the one-time mansion of Felsőbüki Nagy Pál which building is still in use. Our institutions provide our village with the characteristic features of a larger town, that is, we have a stadium and a cultural centre, which, though our village being small, provide a remarkable quality of cultural and sports programmes of which the most significant ones are the Summer Festive Days of Bük and the Sports Gala in December.

Spa bath

BükfürdőToday Bük is famous for its medicinal bath. By a stroke of luck at the end of the 1950s medicinal water was found instead of oil on the confines of the village. The bath has operated since 1962, first it was open only in the season. Today, lying in a beautiful green area of 15 ha, it offers recreation for visitors with 26 pools with 5,600 m2 water surface. Its thermal springs give excellent 55 °C alkali-hydrogen carbonate medicinal water, with a high fluoride, iodine and iron content. It can be used in balneotherapy for curing rheumatic and orthopedic diseases and it can be inhaled to treat respiratory catarrhs.

The number of those who would like to spend a longer period of time in Bükfürdő is significant, they come to take advantage of cures as well as to relax.

During the past few years there have been some improvements, not only did the spa bath become more beautiful but also the facilities of accommodation multiplied - the visitors can choose from numerous hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, campsites or private rooms.
